Football Editions #1 : Icons
Football Editions is the new footie publication based side project by London studio Not On Sunday.
Launching with their first edition “Football Icons”, the book comes in it’s own slick branding identity created using a bespoke edition of typeface Knockout and a clean white and green colour scheme. The highly interesting book explores the world of branding amongst players of this day and age and looks back to the legends.
“With the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Bale etc. all having there brand marques/logos, we wanted to appreciate the World Cup legends of yesteryear such as Baggio, Bobby Moore and Johan Cruyff and show what their icons could have been had they still been in the game today.”
“Each of the icons we’ve created has a link back to the player with an interesting fact. Cruyff always had a 2 stripe adidas kit as he was sponsored by Puma and refused to wear 3 stripes, so we based his ‘JC’ icon on the 2 stripes. Bobby Moore was described as the best reader of the game by Franz Beckenbauer so we created this strong bold book shaped ‘M’ and so on.”
The first publication launches alongside their equally exciting website, which showcases their typeface GS Header, a tribute to Wim Crouwel’s many works for the dutch national teams shirts. It’s also the home site for God Squad, Not On Sunday’s 5-a-side team for which they have branded.
